Chapter Eight

I KEPT GOING OVER TO GRAM’S to read the Bible to her, and Clarence and Andy kept taking turns sitting there listening to me read. Then, one Sunday morning, just before we left for church, we saw Andy all dressed up, in what must have been his best suit.

“Hi,” Roy called across the street. “How come you’re all dressed up?”

“Going to church,” Andy replied.

“Church?” I said, almost loud enough for him to hear it all the way across the street.

“That’s what he said,” Roy answered.

I wondered if Andy was going to our church or if he would rather go to another one. I didn’t have to wonder long though, because after we got there, and sat down in the same place we always sit, the usher brought Andy down the aisle and seated him in the row right in front of us. I watched Andy during all the parts of the service and especially when it was time for the offering. He didn’t dig in his pocket, or anything, so I guess he wasn’t planning on giving even a penny.

During the offering, something sort of funny happened. Well, I guess it wasn’t funny for the little lady who did it, but Roy and I had all we could do to keep from laughing. I thought Andy would laugh too, but he must have been half asleep. Come to think of it, I’ll bet there are a lot of people who would just as soon be asleep when it’s offering time. That way their consciences wouldn’t hurt them when they pass up the offering plate and don’t put anything in.

Well, anyway, a little old lady was sitting a couple of rows behind the famous Sparton pew; that’s us, you know. I turned around to see what was going on. Mother always hates that. She says we are to look toward the front and not turn all the way around. I sort of agree with her, but what can I do when all the interesting things happen behind us? I sure don’t want to miss out on them. So I keep forgetting what she tells me, and turn around.

The offering plate was coming down this one aisle see, and this little old lady put her hand out to get it. But her hand was so shaky that she didn’t get a very good hold on the plate. So you know what happened? She dropped it. And there it went, offering plate, pennies and all. All the kids around there snickered like everything, and that sure didn’t help the little old lady. And the kids who sat up in the balcony almost tipped themselves upside down, hanging over the edge trying to see what was going on down on the first floor.

As soon as the plate fell, money started rolling all the way down to the front. I got to thinking that maybe that was the fastest way to take the offering anyway. Maybe the churches could start a new rule. As
